Lent: An Empty Tomb

The Women Find An Empty Tomb

“The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment” – Luke 23: 55-56 NIV

My Thoughts:
While Jesus’ disciples were hiding in Jerusalem, afraid for their lives, the women had followed and seen where Jesus was laid to rest on Friday. The women rested on Saturday, the Sabbath day, according to the Mosaic Law. But the chief priests and Pharisees went to Pilate the morning of the Sabbath day and asked for a guard to be placed at the tomb for three days, remembering that Jesus had said that in three days He would rise again. This was done so that Jesus’ disciples couldn’t steal the body and claim He had risen from the dead. So a Roman guard was placed at the tomb and the stone was sealed over the entrance. This was the second day after Jesus’ death, Saturday.

When the Sabbath was over at sunset of that day—Saturday—Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and bought sweet spices and ointments to properly anoint and bury the body of Jesus whom they loved. At dawn the next morning—Sunday—the third day after Jesus’ death, there is a second earthquake in the garden where the tomb of Jesus was. And an angel of the Lord, with a bright shining face and clothing as white as snow, came down from heaven and rolled away the stone from the door of the tomb and calmly sat upon it, causing the Roman guards to tremble with fear and faint. When they recovered they fled into the city to report what they had seen.
